Sustainable Living Class Series Offered by Wedgwood Justice and Peace Coalition (WJPC) - Starting October 13

A new Adult Education series will be starting October 13th and running for 7 weeks, through November 24th (not Thanksgiving weekend!).  Each session will start Sunday at 11:15 and go for an hour and a half, until 12:45pm.  As you may recall, WJPC is a group of concerned neighbors from WPC, Our Lady of the Lake, University Unitarian Church (UUC) peace making committees and ONES (Occupy Northeast Seattle) that started two years ago as a result of WPC’s Peace Fellowship series on Economic Justice.  This group has continued to hold public forums, provide education and actions for those interested in causes of justice and peace for all.  While the curriculum will not have a specific spiritual element, we, as participants, can bring that element to the curriculum and discussions.  Please join Peace Fellowship and other WPCers along with other community neighbors as we meet to discuss important topics.

This series will be focused on Choices for Sustainable Living, a curriculum developed by the Northwest Earth Institute (http://www.nwei.org/).  An excerpt from NWEI’s website:  “The term “sustainability” is used so freely, it’s difficult to understand what it can mean. At its essence, sustainability embodies hope for a healthy, just and bright future for us all. ‘Choices for Sustainable Living’ provides participants a powerful opportunity to explore sustainability more deeply and learn its unique meaning from individual, societal and global perspectives. ‘Choices for Sustainable Living’ helps us discover new ways of living and together, make change more possible.  NWEI’s self-led discussion courses are designed to spark shared learning, stories, and action.  This series includes use of a systems-thinking exercise to help participants dive more deeply into the issues.  A detailed list of articles and resources included in the Choices for Sustainable Living course book is available in the table of contents found at: http://www.nwei.org/assets/CSL-Table-of-Contents.pdf.  Or you can peruse a sampling of the text at http://www.nwei.org/assets/CSL-2012-Sampler.pdf.  Participants read each week’s material (including brief articles, book excerpts and/or links to online content) on their own before each meeting. During each session, group members take turns leading discussion questions provided in the course booklet.  Each book costs $15.00.  Books are also available digitally, but cost the same.

Because there is a cost for the books, pre-registration is required.  Registration forms will be available in the Narthex.  Registration will close by Oct 6th at the latest.  To be sure you have a copy of the booklet in time, please register sooner.  Please contact Cil Pierce if you have questions or would like to register (cillpierce@gmail.com or 206-778-4184).  All participants are encouraged to attend each session, as much as possible, in order to provide group continuity.  Childcare will be provided.  Please contact Cil directly if you’ll be needing childcare.  To encourage more learning and understanding of our own community, we’ll be rotating the classes between churches.  Details of specific locations will be provided on the registration form.   Please join us in exploring sustainability as it relates to our lives here in Wedgwood!

Church Phone System Down

The church phone system went down this afternoon, so if you try to call the church you most likely won't get through even to leave a voicemail. For the time being, if possible please use email to get in touch with the staff. Our main email account is wedgpres@wedgpres.org  Sorry for any inconvenience. We will work on getting it fixed as soon as possible.
